Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity Supervised by Professors Bernhard Schwartlaender and Gordon Guoen Liu at Peking University

Position: Full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Peking University

 

Research Areas: Planetary Health with a focus on all 4 pillars of the Planetary Health Axis System and their interconnectedness: Human Health, Species Health, Environment Health and Societal Health & Economics. Building of international research cooperation and networks.

 

Supervisors:

Bernhard Schwartlaender, MD and PhD., is the University Distinguished Chair Professor of Planetary Health, Institute for Global Health and Development, Peking University. From 2021 to 2025 he held the position of Global Health Envoy, German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Prior to these assignments, Bernhard Schwartlaender had an esteemed career at the World Health Organization. He served as Assistant Director General and Chef de Cabinet at its headquarter, as well as WHO Representative in China. He is a medical doctor and holds a doctorate in medical epidemiology. Bernhard Schwartlaender has published widely in scientific journals and books and taught applied epidemiology and health diplomacy. Bernhard Schwartlaender's extensive career is marked by his commitment to advancing global health initiatives and his ability to navigate complex international health challenges. He is passionate about global health and believes in the power of collaborative efforts to tackle the health challenges of our times.

 

Gordon Guoen Liu, PhD., is the Peking University BOYA Distinguished Professor of Economics, Dean of Peking University Institute for Global Health and Development, a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Medicine, and Founding Director of PKU China Center for Health Economic Research. Dr. Liu has served numerus roles in professional services, including the chair of the Academic Committee for PKU Educational Economics; co-organizer of the “US-China Track II Dialogue on Health”, associate editor for Health Economics (2013 -), and the Editor-in-Chief for China Journal of Pharmaceutical Economics (2006 -). Currently, Dr. Liu leads on two major research projects: 1) The Planetary Health Axis System (PHAS), an AI driven large model of the multi-axis digital system, aiming to track the global development dynamics and the human footprints against the planetary boundaries; 2) The Survey of Medical Assessment for Robotic Technology (SMART), a nationally multicentered economic panel study on robotic surgeries compared to conventional approaches.

Nature of the position: Administered in accordance with Peking University’s relevant regulations for postdoctoral researchers

 

Remuneration: Highly competitive remuneration and development programme; office based at Peking University’s main campus. Outstanding candidates will be recommended for the Boya Postdoctoral Programme, with additional rewards for research publications.

 

Application Requirements:

 1. Full-time, dedicated engagement in postdoctoral research;

 2. Applicants must be aged 35 or under and have obtained their PhD within the last three years;

 3. Training background in health and development economics or similar qualifications, health big data and artificial intelligence.

 4. Proficiency in the application of modern statistical methods, data mining and machine learning theories and tools; strong modelling skills, or familiarity with UI interaction design, complex data visualization, digital media arts, and related skills.

5.Good understanding of global health and scientific networks globally in areas relevant for planetary health. Track record in networking across science centers internationally. Good understanding of the science to policy interaction.

6. Excellent English language skills (reading, writing and speaking);
